Garden Irrigation using Drippers

The Best Garden Watering System for Conserving Water!

In the world of irrigation, drip is a form of low volume, low pressure watering that burst, in its modern form, onto the agricultural scene about 50 years ago.  It has been so successful there that gardeners and landscapers wanted to translate that success to the residential and commercial world.

So what makes drip irrigation worth a second look?  Just skim through the list of benefits:
  • It’s a very flexible system:
    • match emitter flow and numbers to the size or need of the plant
    • tailor to any garden bed shape
    • install horizontally or vertically or anything in between
    • not limited to ground level
    • encourages flexible garden design
    • can be used on ornamentals, vegetables and trees, at any stage of growth
  • It limits the amount of water that’s wasted:
    • less runoff compared to high volume systems like sprinklers
    • much lower loss from evaporation
    • doesn’t overspray paths, paving or buildings etc
    • ideally suited to watering gardens in times of drought when water restrictions apply
  • It has a major positive impact on plant growth
    • when operated correctly, it keeps the plant well supplied with water
    • produces healthier plants because they need not be subjected to water stress
    • provides the opportunity for nutrients to be taken up more effectively – hence the rapid, healthy growth.
Although you can operate a drip system manually (and a lot of people do), to get the very best out of it, irrigations should be applied daily, every two days or even every three days, and most people baulk at having to remember to do this!.  Unlike sprinkler irrigation, drip doesn’t wet the entire soil volume which means that less water is stored in the soil.  As a consequence, it makes sense to irrigate more frequently.  So if you are unable to be on hand to turn the system on as frequently as you think it should be, help is at hand.  Install an irrigation controller and program in a schedule that turns the system on and off as often as you want.

And because the weather can be hot or cold and wet or dry, that schedule should be monitored and adapted when necessary.  But don’t let this put you off!  You can get the hang of it pretty quickly, and when you do, you’ll see the benefits – tasty sweet tomatoes, luscious strawberries, profuse blooms, yummy herbs and fast growing trees and shrubs!

The Mini Bubbler Spike can be located at or near the plant, and its flow can be regulated by simply rotating the cap.  It can be turned off completely, or can be adjusted so that for example, it delivers about 120 LPH at 150 kPa pressure. By rotating the cap, Mini Bubbler flow can be altered from zero to about 120 LPH at 150 kPa pressure.  At this pressure, the Mini Bubbler covers about 0..3 diameter circle.  Additional flow is available at higher pressure.

This is an all-in-one Dripper and Spike that you actually can see dripping.  Save water by locating the dripper directly above the root zone. Pressure Compensating design means pressure variation is no problem: it always drips at the same rate - 2 lph. On the ground, in hanging baskets, down slopes - provided the pressure at the dripper is about 100 kPa or more, it always drips the same amount! The PC Shrubbler is a Pressure Compensating, fixed diameter coverage drip emitter, which gives uniform coverage from all emitters on the same supply line.
